Summary of Position: Responsible for the management of laboratory assistants, academic tools, equipment, supplies, and facilities required to assure the most efficient experience for the students of the College of Engineering Technology and the Institute for Construction Education and Training's (ICET) Highway Training Program. Support for the college's instructional objectives within these environments to assure safe, relevant, and effective learning. Oversee operations on-the-road at off-site training locations. Assist with preparing and maintaining all applicable records and files. Implement necessary policies and procedures relative to maintain compliance with applicable governing bodies. Act as a knowledge base regarding changes within the industry and maintain instructional capacity with ability to communicate those changes in a learning environment as needed.

Required Education: Master's degree associated with Technical Education, Civil Engineering or established progress toward such a degree or related field AND a Bachelor's Degree in either Construction Management, Civil Engineering or Business Administration or related field.  
Required Work Experience: Minimum five years heavy/civil industry experience in positions of increasing responsibility.  
Required Licenses and Certifications: Certification/qualification for MDOT Aggregate Inspection Level One, MDOT Aggregate Inspection Level Two, MDOT Density Control Technician , HMA Level One Lab Tech (OR MDOT QCQA Superpave HMA Tech), and Troxler Nuclear Gauge Certification within the past 10 years.
A valid State of Michigan driver's license.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: At least one year of teaching materials testing methods and administering an asphalt testing laboratory. Ability to teach MDOT Aggregate Inspection Level One, MDOT Aggregate Inspection Level Two, MDOT Density Control, HMA Level One Lab Tech, MDOT and HMA Sampling for Local Agency Projects.  
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Oversee on campus and remote learning operations and coordinate support staff (part-time employees and guest lecturers) at these sites.
Manage the 10-20% of operations which occur at off-campus training sites (DOT facilities, conference centers, partner colleges) with potential overnight hotel stays to fulfill DOT contracts.
Lab Environment: Maintain an effective learning environment that is in alignment with requirements identified within our contracts to provide a variety of highway inspector training on behalf of the State of Michigan.
Training and certification programs: assist with preparing training courses, deliver and prepare for instruction of on and off campus training courses for certifying MDOT technicians and assist with meeting industry educational requests. Be available and knowledgeable to step into ICET's training programs and lead lab and classroom training initiatives. Teach ICET training material as needed for staff shortages and to maximize ICET revenue.
Assist with renewal of existing MDOT contracts and the pursuit of additional contracts with MDOT and industry.
Report to the Director of ICET, including weekly updates and lab progress status updates. Jointly identify growth objectives and ways to enhance learning outcomes for ICET courses.
Maintain frequent and quality communication with potential students, faculty, and industry. Maintain customer-oriented responsiveness to requests, course development, and reporting of test results and plans.
Aid in maintaining all laboratory equipment in high-quality operating condition.
Assure compliance in all safety, equipment and facility codes and regulations.
Serve as liaison to internal (FSU) and external (contractor/industry) technicians or suppliers.
Assist with coordinating building and equipment emergency and safety functions.
Assure the proper storing, handling of, and disposal of hazardous waste and materials.
Assist with assembly of lab manuals and student packets and with stocking of the learning environment with applicable student handouts and supplies.
Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.

Skills and Abilities: Ability to work with faculty and students.
Knowledge of governing body specifications and requirements.
Able to communicate technical aspects of a variety of types of inspection procedures.
Practical experience in successful problem solving and efficient/effective solution implementation.
Knowledge of budgeting, negotiating, and cost containment activities.
Knowledge of equipment typical of an asphalt, aggregate, and non-destructive nuclear gauge density testing laboratory typical for MDOT inspections.
Demonstrated commitment, experience and understanding for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
