Summary of Position: Ferris State University has a unique story to tell and amazing opportunities ahead. The Advancement Department within the Division of University Advancement and Marketing seeks an entry-level advancement professional whose values and purpose align with those at Ferris and who desire to make a difference for our students. With a focus on University Fundraising Priorities and an emphasis on major gifts exceeding $25,000, the Advancement Officer is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual major gift donors and prospects. Candidates should demonstrate a high degree of emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills. Foster collaborative relationships with advancement colleagues and University constituents. They should be goal and outcome-oriented with excellent relationship-building skills. Reports to the Director of Advancement – Major Gifts.

Required Work Experience: Ability to work independently. Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills (both written and oral). Aptitude to work well with diverse constituencies. High level of sophistication and maturity in social and professional settings.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: Work experience in higher education, or other large complex organization.
Experience with Customer Relationship Management systems/databases.
Knowledge of Ferris State University.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: • Embrace and articulate the mission and culture of Ferris State University and possess a strong working knowledge of its programs and departments.
• Advance individual relationships that result in philanthropic contributions.
• Identify, qualify, and manage a portfolio of prospects.
• Plan and implement strategies and effective activities for soliciting prospects including candidates for planned gifts and/or multi-year pledges.
• Match funding priorities to individual donor interests.
• Gather data, assess prospects, and develop strategies designed to understand the current and lifetime giving potential of individual prospects.
• Ensure consistent and appropriate contact while demonstrating effective stewardship.
• Gain a comprehensive understanding of the university’s funding priorities and effectively articulate needs to individual donors.
• Generate gift agreements for new gifts.
• Serve as an active team member in the development and implementation of University Advancement goals.
• Assist with developing communications, designing meeting content, preparing materials, and coordinating plans to support fundraising strategies and priorities.
• Collaborate with colleagues within University Advancement and Marketing and across the campus community.
• Gather, record, and properly store information about prospects and donors utilizing the University’s donor and alumni tracking database.
• Participate in the department’s activities, i.e. staff retreat, serving on special committees and understanding the University’s broader fundraising objectives.
• Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.
• Reports to the Director of Advancement — Major Gifts.
• Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of designated information and performing duties in compliance with applicable policies and procedures.
• Travel as necessary, including evenings and weekends, to achieve monthly and annuals goals.

• Ability to effectively work independently to achieve monthly and annual goals.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment.
• Ability to travel on day, overnight trips, evenings and weekends as required.
• Skilled with using Microsoft Office and customer relations management software.
• A general level of comfort when dealing with high net worth individuals and an ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality.
• Ability to understand diverse perspectives and acknowledge the significance of differences and complexities in background, cultures, values and viewpoints as the foundation for an inclusive environment.
