Summary of Position: Supervises the daily operations of the Public Safety department. Works under the general supervision of the Director of Public Safety.

Required Education: Minimum education required is a Associate’s degree.  
Required Work Experience: Minimum of 3 years as a police supervisor.  
Required Licenses and Certifications: Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) certification within 90-days of appointment. Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: A Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or related field is desirable.  
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Supervise the daily operations of the department including responding to complaint reports, personnel issues, etc. Directly supervises Sgt.’s. Oversee supervision of student employees. This is a uniform position, unless otherwise assigned in plain clothes by the director. This person needs to be able to respond to complaints and emergencies on campus, which includes the occasional assignment to fill in a shift assignment as needed, or assigned by the director.

Serve as the hearing officer for parking violation appeals.

Represent the department and the University as a member of the Mecosta County Local Emergency Planning Commission and/or other law enforcement committees as requested.

Recommend equipment purchases for the department. Responsible for ordering, inventory, and maintenance of department equipment.

Maintain efficiency of departmental radio equipment, ordering repairs as needed.

Identify, facilitate, and assist in the training of departmental officers, both in annual required training, policy and procedures, and additional training as needed.

Perform liaison duties with Michigan’s Law Enforcement Information Network and Uniform Crime Reporting System and other state agencies as requested.

Assume responsibility for the department in the absence of the Director.

Maintain evidence and property in the property room and arrange for evidentiary items to be sent to the crime lab.

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with University policies and applicable laws.

Reports directly to the Director of Public Safety.

Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of designated information.

Supervises all Public Safety Sergeants, Officers, support staff and student employees.

Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.

Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.
