Summary of Position: Full-time 12-month tenure-track faculty position. Responsible for teaching in laboratory, classroom, and clinic. The candidate will be expected to develop in the areas of patient care, teaching/advising, scholarly/professional activities, and service.

The anticipated start date of this position is May/June of 2023 at the earliest and August of 2023 at the latest (preferably May/June of 2023).

Required Education: At the time of appointment, the applicant must hold the Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree and must either have completed an accredited optometric residency or have an equivalent degree or experience in patient care.  
Required Work Experience: At least one year of residency experience, or 5 years of consistent clinical experience post-graduation if no residency was completed, or commensurate work/professional experience.  
Required Licenses and Certifications: At the time of appointment, the applicant must have or be eligible to obtain a Michigan optometry license with DPA and TPA certifications, and be eligible for appointment to the clinical staff of the college.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: The applicant should demonstrate experience and a strong level of interest in clinical and didactic instruction in posterior segment disease and glaucoma. It is also preferred that the candidate have experience working within a team-teaching environment and demonstrate the ability to initiate and complete scholarly/professional activities.
Residency experience in ocular disease, primary care, or community health is preferred. Applicants with clinical experience beyond the required completion of a residency or 5 years clinical experience are preferred.
 
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Requires classroom teaching in ocular disease courses, but is not limited to those courses. May present other elements of the optometric curriculum, including primary care optometry, contact lenses, anterior segment disease, posterior segment disease, neuro-optometry, pediatrics, practice management, and public health, depending on need, interest, and expertise.

Laboratory appointments where didactic information is translated into hands-on labs where students learn to be optometric clinicians.

Patient care in an oversight capacity with students in the University Eye Center clinic.

Faculty engage in optometric research that expands the standards of optometric care, creates knowledge in the optometric profession, and involves students, enabling them to learn about research and include it in the expertise they obtain from the OD program. This hire would be expected to participate in these activities.

Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Faculty members also have professional responsibilities which may include advising students, orientation and registration of students, participation in University committees, keeping regular posted office hours (which are scheduled at times convenient for students), and participation in traditional functions which have academic significance (ex. reporting initial student participation data and submitting final grades on time). Faculty members may be required to teach off-campus or asynchronously, and/or take after-hours clinical calls.

Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.
 
Marginal Duties/Responsibilities: Depending on experience, the successful applicant will be considered for appointment as Chief of the Medical-Surgical Clinic at the Michigan College of Optometry.
