Summary of Position: The FlexLab Coordinator supports the Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) community’s learning and use of digital output/fabrication technologies. This position reports to the Dean of Academic Affairs and may coordinate with assigned faculty or a committee of stakeholders. The FlexLab Coordinator has a working familiarity with and passion for digital design and production processes and will be able to quickly become familiar with the use of the FlexLab’s specific input and output devices - including wide format inkjet printers, vinyl cutters, 3D scanners, 3D printers, and laser cutters/engravers. The FlexLab Coordinator coordinates with faculty and administration on digital fabrication education strategy, manages student employees, implements new initiatives, maintains hardware, processes digital fabrication/design projects for the college community, and supports students in the acquisition of and practice with the interfaces between designs, computers, and physical objects. The FlexLab Coordinator will develop and support services to be delivered to support industry as needed and as time allows.

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in a field related to art, design, digital fabrication, or technology.  
Required Work Experience: Professional experience in digital fabrication methods and customer service.
Experience with Macintosh and Windows operating systems.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered:    
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Communicate effectively with the Dean of Academic Affairs, college, university, and community stakeholders.
Track material and technology usage and provide timely reporting.
Develop and manage FlexLab budget.
Order materials and deploy new equipment.
Coordinate and direct the work of student employees.
Learn, train employees, and help students, faculty and staff utilize cutting edge equipment including wide format inkjet printers, 3D scanners, 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and laser cutters/engravers.
Carry out system maintenance (on workstations and peripherals).
Coordinate activities and projects across the college and university.
Lead upgrade initiatives and special projects as needed.
Ensure the safe and efficient operation of the FlexLab and all of its equipment and uses.
Professionally represent the college to students, faculty, staff, and the extended community.
Develop a strategy to deliver and support services for industry use of the FlexLab services as a revenue generating business.
Work collaboratively with Ferris State University to leverage systems to develop, implement, and maintain a point of sales system for internal and external customers of the FlexLab.
Develop and deliver support workshops and curriculum on use of resources in the FlexLab to build knowledge and awareness of resources in the FlexLab for the KCAD community.
Train and supervise student employees and carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with university policies and applicable laws.
Demonstrate an understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.
Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.
 
Marginal Duties/Responsibilities:    
Skills and Abilities: Ability to setup and maintain computer workstations and related peripherals in coordination with IT.
Proficiency with digital design and output processes.
Demonstrated commitment, experience and understanding for diversity, equity and inclusion.
