Summary of Position: Sports Communication at Ferris is a dynamic, interdisciplinary program that works closely with the Ferris Athletic Department, which boasts nationally ranked D1 and D2 teams. The Sports Communication program offers three degree levels: Bachelor of Science, Minor and Certificate. The program is rooted and housed in the Communication discipline within the Department of Humanities, and it includes one of the following emphases: Social Media and Digital Communication, Multimedia Journalism, Integrated Marketing Techniques, or Event Management.
As the Sports Communication "champion," the finalist will participate in recruitment activities, advise students, coordinate program-related activities, and collaborate with campus and community partners. The finalist will be expected to teach a 4-4 load of classes and direct internships or practicum/research projects. Required teaching assignments include Sports Communication and Seminar in Sports Communication (both project-based); and at least one of the core General Education Communication courses: Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, and/or Small Group Decision Making. The finalist could potentially also teach Intercultural Communication, Diversity and Communication, and other courses that they would be encouraged to develop within their area of expertise.
Requirements for this position include: a minimum of master’s degree in Communication, Sports Communication, or related field. Demonstrated experience teaching courses in Sports Communication or related subject areas and in at least one of these courses: Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, and/or Small Group Communication. In addition, experience teaching Intercultural Communication, Diversity & Communication, and/or Broadcast Presentation is highly desirable.
The anticipated start date for this position is August 2024.

Required Work Experience: • Demonstrated teaching experience teaching courses in Sports Communication or related field
• Demonstrated teaching experience in one or more of these subject areas: Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Small Group Communication.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: • ABD or completed PhD in Communication, Sports Communication or related field.
• Experience in sports and/or relevant industries
• Demonstrated teaching experience in Intercultural Communication and/or Diversity and Communication
 
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: • Teach courses in Sports Communication
• Teach one or more of these General Education Communication courses: Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Small Group Communication
• Develop courses in the area of the candidate's expertise
• Participate in recruitment activities
• Coordinate programmatic-related activities
• Collaborate with campus and community partners
• Faculty members also have professional responsibilities which may include advising students, orientation and registration of students, participation in University committees, keeping regular posted office hours (which are scheduled at times convenient for students), and participation in traditional functions which have academic significance (ex. reporting initial student participation data and submitting final grades on time).
• Faculty members may be required to teach off-campus or in an on-line environment.
• Any other duties assigned within the position classification area
• Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.,
