Position Title: KCAD Sponsored Project Intern – Product Development (Student Position)
Location: Grand Rapids, Michigan
Department:

KCAD Innovation Hub

Advertised Salary: $20 per hour
Summary of Position:

KCAD is working in collaboration with researchers, engineers, and physical trainers from a partner institution to develop a prototype medical device that uses an electrical current to measure inflammation in the body. The device will be used to evaluate musculoskeletal (MSK) tissue status and damage over time as patients recover from injury. The KCAD product development team of faculty and student interns will focus on developing a concept and prototype for two aspects of the system: a softgood wearable product for the hands and feet that holds the electronic sensors, and the user experience/interface for the app that presents data to the user. The KCAD team will explore several concepts through brainstorming, ideation, and prototype experimentation. A final concept direction will be visualized and prototyped for testing.

All project activities and deliverables will be executed in collaboration with the project sponsor and include weekly design reviews with the project team where all stakeholders can provide input and feedback. The project will require two student interns: One with a background in product/fashion design and one with a background in graphic/user experience design. The interdisciplinary team will work under the mentorship of the faculty leading the project from the KCAD. The student interns will work in a hybridized workflow that will include some in-person meetings, remote work (anywhere on campus), and prototyping work in various KCAD/FSU labs and shops.

This is a short-term position that will coincide with a project timeline, starting on February 22, 2026, and ending on April 18, 2026. Student interns will work an average of 10 hours per week for seven weeks of project activity, not to exceed a total of 70 hours per student. The project will pause activities during the week of March 8, 2026 for spring break.

- Students should have experience documenting product development deliverables in a project workbook, report, and/or presentation.
- Students should have strong skills in communication, teamwork, collaboration, and creativity.
