Summary of Position: Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) in Grand Rapids, MI, prepares artists and designers to have impact through practice. Responsibilities for a KCAD adjunct faculty member include syllabus and class preparation, instruction during scheduled course time, providing reasonable availability to students for consultation and assistance with respect to assigned course(s), evaluation of student performance, submission of final grades on the FSU Banner system, and archiving of both course material and student work as requested by the program chair and/or the Dean of Academic Affairs.

The mission of KCAD’s Graphic Design program is to graduate innovative design thinkers and makers. Students will broadly and boldly apply their skills across established and emerging media. They will be educated in a hands-on, integrative, studio-based learning environment where they will learn to use design fundamentals and contemporary technology as tools for strategic communication, problem-solving, and personal expression.

The Graphic Design program promotes curiosity, exploration, and investigation through active engagement in process and making. Students are encouraged to view their world with awe,
wonder, and an open mind, to examine and experiment, and to ask questions and seek answers.

Through a comprehensive and rigorous education, graduates of the Graphic Design program will be prepared for further evolution within the professional field of graphic design and other design-related disciplines.

Teaching assignments within the BFA Graphic Design Program include a series of introductory to intermediate design-related content, including technologies- and typography-based courses, as well as courses addressing a wide range of media such as branding, advertising, publication, packaging, and UI/UX. Courses will be taught in person on KCAD’s campus in Grand Rapids.
Position Type: Faculty - Temporary & Continuing  
Required Education: Master’s degree in a related field to content being taught
Master’s degree in unrelated field and additional minimum of 18 graduate credits in a field related to the content being taught
A bachelor’s degree in a related field to content being taught, a minimum of six years of experience working in the field of industry of the content area being taught, and a combination of:
• Evidence of recognized accomplishment in area being taught, including awards, bibliography of publication referencing design or art work or scholarship or;
• Evidence of scholarly/creative accomplishment in terms of completed design work, patents, exhibitions, presentations, publication, and juried recognition at the regional, national and international level or;
• Evidence of service to the field in terms of memberships on committees or boards of professional organizations and other contributions to the field
Required Work Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of professional-level practice in graphic design.
Proficiency in design thinking, as well as industry-standard software and processes, including but not limited to concepting, visual literacy, art direction, typography, etc.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: Prior teaching experience (adjunct or full-time).
Knowledge of design history, contemporary industry and technologies trends, academic research.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Prepare and distribute syllabi and class materials according to college standards.
Teach appropriate course as assigned.
Assess and evaluate student learning and provide formative feedback throughout the duration of the course.
Provide reasonable availability to students for consultation and assistance with respect to assigned course(s).
Evaluate student performance.
Demonstrate an understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.
Submit midterm and final grades on the FSU Banner system.
Display and archive course material and student work as requested by program chair and/or the Dean of Academic Affairs.
Contribute to the college’s continuous improvement.
Maintain effective communication with students and colleagues.
Work collaboratively with faculty, students, and staff throughout the college.
Marginal Duties/Responsibilities:    
Skills and Abilities: Proficiency in professional design technologies including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.
Working knowledge of typography and typesetting.
Demonstrated commitment, experience and understanding for diversity, equity and inclusion.
Ability to direct multiple student projects and engage in project-based assessment.
Ability to teach in multiple subject areas within the graphic design curriculum.
