Summary of Position: |
Network Engineer I staff members are responsible for the maintenance, configuration, installation, and troubleshooting of the Ferris State University data and telephony infrastructure.

Required Education: |
Associate Degree in Computer Networking or related field or equivalent technical or professional experience related to the design, installation, and maintenance of local and wide area networks required. |

Required Work Experience: |
One year of professional work experience as a network technician or network administrator in an enterprise level or equivalent network environment. |

Experience in a higher education setting. Experience with Microsoft Telephony. Experience with Extreme Network’s hardware and configuration Experience with DNS and DHCP |

Essential Duties/Responsibilities: |
Install, support and maintain network related hardware and software
Troubleshoot and maintain structured cabling, fiber optic, and wireless networking technologies Configure, install, and maintain Microsoft Telephony environment
Analyze and resolve issues related to OSI levels 1 and 2
Work closely with other departments/organizations and collaborating with other IT staff
Reports directly to immediate supervisor as assigned
Responsible for following University and departmental policies and procedures, particularly those related to the proper use and administration of IT systems
Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of designated information
Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.
Any other duties assigned within the position classification area. |

Marginal Duties/Responsibilities: |
Create, edit, and present documentation related to the network environment Plan and implement Network hardware upgrades Provide technical support for users with varying levels of IT knowledge and competence Planning and managing projects |
|
Skills and Abilities: |
This position also requires a valid Michigan driver’s license
Adhering to MIOSHA safety practices
Perform multiple technical tasks with a need to routinely upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions
Preparing and maintaining accurate records
Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: utilizing the pertinent network, application, operating system monitoring, and troubleshooting hardware and software
Conduct oneself with professionalism in customer-facing instances
Demonstrated commitment, experience and understanding for diversity, equity, and inclusion |
