Advertised Salary: $22.94 hourly rate pursuant to the FSU and AFSCME/AFL-CIO Agreement

Temporary/Continuing:  Continuing

Union Group: Custodial, Maintenance, Dining, Skilled Trade (AFSCME Local 1609)  
Term of Position: 12 Month  
At Will/Just Cause: Just Cause  
Summary of Position: Perform skilled trades work in repairing and maintaining University owned and leased vehicles, heavy equipment and small engines.  
Position Type: Staff  
Required Education: High school diploma or GED equivalency.  
Required Work Experience: Three years full-time equivalent automotive mechanic experience in licensed recognized automotive repair facility.  
Required Licenses and Certifications: Valid Michigan driver’s license.
Within one year from date of hire, must obtain a commercial driver’s license, B, with no restrictions.
Must receive forklift certification within 180 days of date of hire.
Michigan certification or ASE equivalent in at least four categories of the first eight categories in automotive and light truck repair.
Must acquire other four categories within one year from date of hire.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: Michigan certification or ASE equivalent in one or more of the first six categories in heavy duty truck repair.  
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Diagnose and analyze problems utilizing automotive computerized electrical diagnostic systems.
Fabricate and repair using welding equipment.
Keep accurate records and procure related parts.
Maintain assigned tools, equipment and work area in a neat, organized and clean non-hazardous environment.
Perform minor body repairs.
Rebuild transmissions and repair and/or replace hydraulic transmission systems.
Repair automotive electrical and hydraulic systems.
Repair, mount, and balance tires; work on related areas of vehicle suspension systems.
Tune up and overhaul all types of engines to include using required welding equipment.
Other duties may be assigned.
Maintain safety and security of equipment, vehicles, keys, tools, materials, and inventories.
Maintain safety, health, and quality standards and comply with various regulations in all duties and responsibilities.
Report to immediate supervisor.
Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.

Marginal Duties/Responsibilities: Assist other service workers as needed.
Train and work with others in the performance of the characteristic duties.
 
Skills and Abilities: Communicate effectively with students, staff, faculty and visitors.
Diagnose and analyze using automotive computerized electrical equipment.
Direct, train and work with mechanic intern students, automotive apprentices and others in the performance of the characteristic duties.
Keep and maintain accurate records.
Maintain University standards of good workmanship in both quality and quantity.
Perform skilled work in the repair and maintenance of vehicles, heavy equipment, commercial/industrial farm tractors, and small engines.
Read, understand and follow directions, safety labels, equipment operations manuals, etc.
Understand and know methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade.
Understand, use good judgment, and follow procedures established through safety training and the physical plant safety manual.
Use welding equipment.
Work harmoniously with others in situations of variable temperatures; occasional noise; stressful workloads; and inclement weather environments.
Work independently.
Lift a minimum of 30 lbs. and occasionally up to 50 lbs.
Sit, walk, lift, push, pull, stoop, bend, climb, crawl and lie on back on mechanic’s creeper .
Stand for most of shift.
Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
