Position Title: HVACR Mechanic  
Location: Big Rapids (Main Campus)  
Advertised Salary: $21.72 hourly rate pursuant to the FSU and AFSCME/AFL-CIO Agreement.  
FLSA: Non-Exempt  
Temporary/Continuing:  Continuing  
Part-Time/Full-Time: Full-Time  
At Will/Just Cause: Just Cause  
Summary of Position: Perform skilled trades work in repairing, installing, diagnosing, and maintaining heating, ventilating, air conditioning systems, refrigeration and associated equipment on University property.  
Position Type: Staff  
Required Education: High school diploma or GED equivalency.

An Associate’s degree in a related field with 5 years of commercial work experience or
10 years work experience in commercial HVAC&R in lieu of completion of apprenticeship program or an associate’s degree.
 
Required Work Experience: An Associate’s degree in a related field with 5 years of commercial work experience or 10 years work experience in commercial HVAC&R in lieu of completion of apprenticeship program or an associate’s degree.  
Required Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license.

Possession of Certificate of completion in Universal Application of Refrigerant Transition
 
Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: Current State of Michigan Mechanical Contractor’s License, 1-7.  
Duties/Responsibilities: Estimate material and time requirements for assigned work.

Maintain assigned tools, equipment and work area in a neat, organized and clean non-hazardous environment.

Maintain, inspect, test, adjust, repair, alter, install, and operate all environmental systems, devices, and controls, including fume hood systems and process air systems.

Maintain, inspect, test, adjust, repair, alter, install, and operate all refrigeration systems, devices, and controls, including ice arena process equipment.

Maintain, inspect, test, adjust, repair, alter, install, and operate water treatment for various types of open and closed systems.

Perform scheduled and unscheduled preventative maintenance to all HVAC&R equipment and devices.

Prepare records and service reports.

Requisition materials and parts, communicating with suppliers and technical support.

Stock, maintain and operate a service vehicle in a neat, organized and safe manner.

Troubleshoot malfunctioning systems and controls; test components using mechanical, electric, electronic and chemical testing equipment.

Other duties may be assigned.

Maintain safety and security of equipment, vehicles, keys, tools, materials, and inventories.

Maintain safety, health, and quality standards in all duties and responsibilities.

Report to immediate supervisor.

Train and oversee the work of other employees in the performance of the characteristic duties.

Carry out these responsibilities in accordance with University policies and applicable laws.
 
Skills and Abilities: Communicate effectively with students, staff, faculty and visitors.

Demonstrate extensive knowledge of applicable ASHRAE and EPA rules and regulations.

Direct and train others in the performance of the characteristic duties.

Erect and work from ladders, scaffolding, boom truck, and related devices.

Have considerable knowledge of applicable building code rules and regulations.

Keep and maintain accurate records.

Maintain University standards of good workmanship in both quality and quantity.

Perform mathematical computations with a high degree of accuracy.

Perform skilled work in all HVAC&R-related duties.

Read, understand, interpret, and follow blue prints, sketches, schematics, specifications,
directions, safety labels, equipment operations manuals, etc.

Understand and know methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the HVAC&R trade.

Understand systems and their proper operation.

Understand, use good judgment, and follow procedures established through safety training and the physical plant safety manual.

Utilize computer to access facility controls and to perform other required duties.

Utilize proper technical procedures and techniques.

Work harmoniously with and direct others in situations of variable temperatures, occasional noise, and stressful workloads.

Work independently.

Work with least amount of inconvenience to all people involved.

Lift a minimum of 30 lbs. and occasionally up to 50 lbs.

Sit, walk, lift, push, pull, bend, climb and crawl.

Stand for most of shift.

Work in inclement weather environments to include variable temperature and other conditions.

Work in tunnels, shafts, and similar confined spaces.

Work on ladders, scaffolds, roofs, and elevated surfaces.
