Summary of Position: To serve as a liaison between Veteran students, the University, military organizations, and the Veteran’s Administration (VA); to provide certification of benefits, educational and supportive counseling to recipients; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Required Work Experience: One year of work experience in an administrative setting with customer service.
Higher education work experience that included U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs certification processing.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered:    
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Perform the duties of Veteran Benefits Certifying Official for the University in accordance with current instruction from the VA.

Meet with veterans one-on-one to provide counseling about VA educational benefits and provide them with certification requirements.

Keep current files of and be able to interpret and explain rules and regulations of the VA and applicable state and University policies and procedures.

Attend University new student orientation sessions on- and off-campus and yield programming to provide assistance to military veterans of the incoming enrollment class.

Develop and implement programs for Veteran student retention such as the Veteran’s breakfast and welcome week activities.

Organize and coordinate the activities of the site inspections from the VA and State of Michigan for certifying post-secondary schools.

Actively promote visibility of the University, Schools, and Veteran student accomplishments to the community of interest.

Act as liaison between Veteran students, the University and military organizations and the VA; counsel new, transfer and returning students on registration procedures related to VA and the University; assess Veteran needs, interests and requirements; and refer students to appropriate University departments or outside agencies as needed.

Liaison with recruitment staff and senior administrators for programming to encourage the University’s enrollment growth of military/veteran student populations.

Establish and maintain relationships with military units to promote University’s programs. Advise on recruitment events in collaboration with enrollment services.

Utilize web-based and other software to maintain VA information including enrollment certifications, change of programs and change of status for students.

Collaborate in recruiting Veteran students working with Enrollment Services and the academic colleges.

Collaborate with Academic Affairs to promote Veteran education.

Report directly to the Associate Director of Admissions/Processes.

Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of designated information.

Perform all duties in compliance with applicable University policies and procedures and state and federal requirements.

Responsible for the supervision and training of assigned staff within the area of responsibility.

Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with university policies and applicable laws.

Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.

Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.
 
Marginal Duties/Responsibilities:    
Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of VA rules and regulations, including transfer degree requirements.

Knowledge of general University organization, programs, policies and procedures.

Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with a varied and diverse group of constituents.

Project a positive image and establish good rapport throughout the University and public sector constituencies.

Recognize, recommend and implement effective techniques of processing GI Bill certification related materials.

Utilize effective methods of oral and written communication skills. Able to deliver effective speaking presentations to diverse audiences ranging from one-on-one to that of larger groups.

Demonstrated commitment, experience and understanding for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
